MAGA Republicans, the U.S. Constitution & Your Beat
Top Story: The U.S. Constitution and its Enemies
Radical Republicans talk about the constitution as if they were the only ones who have ever read it. They contend that it is a sacred document, divinely inspired, and should be interpreted literally.
Meanwhile, across the country, heavily-funded, Right-wing think tanks closely allied with the GOP are working hard to dramatically alter our constitution in ways that would eliminate some very basic rights, destroy federal oversight of environmental polluters, and create minority rule.
This radical effort runs — as most all of the GOP’s most draconian plans do — through the states, which means local reporters need to know about it.
Because The Center for Media and Democracy just came out with the above fabulous explainer about what’s at stake, we decided to repeat our recent newsletter tips on covering efforts to destroy our constitution, via a national constitutional convention, sometimes referred to by insiders as “Con-Con.”
Make sure to cover where state and local officials and upcoming candidates stand on altering our constitution, how they have voted on efforts to do so, and whether or not they really love the American constitution as much as they claim.
Just as they did with Roe, Republicans are making plans. They should not be making them in the dark.
